Nintendo's president Shuntaro Furakawa recently spoke to Japanese magazine Kyoto Shinbun about a lot of topics ranging from the Nintendo Switch to overseas markets, but as translated by Siliconera, he also had a bit to say on esports.
Furakawa briefly explained that the Japanese company will continue to support esports, but explained that it's more about connecting with the fans rather than having big competitions worth a lot of money. He used the Japanese Nintendo Live events as an example, adding that they'll hold competitions both in Japan and across the world.
We've already seen increased esports support from Nintendo with the likes of Splatoon 2 in the UK and the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Invitational at E3. We even recently reported on the announcement of the Pokkén Tournament Championship Series not too long ago, so it seems as if they're recognising a desire from the fans for official esports support, even if it might not be at the same scale as other games such as CS:GO and Dota 2.
